How to download a TikTok thumbnail in 3 steps
- Copy the TikTok link. In the TikTok app, open the post, tap Share, then Copy link. On a computer, copy the address bar.
- Paste it here. Paste the link into the box at the top of this page and tap Download. A public post usually resolves in 0.6 to 1.8 seconds.
- Save the cover JPG. Tap Download thumbnail (JPG). The file name ends in _cover.jpg. The MP4 without watermark is offered too.
What does this TikTok thumbnail downloader do?
This TikTok thumbnail downloader saves the cover image of a public TikTok video as a JPG file. Paste the post link, tap Download, then tap Download thumbnail (JPG). You get the exact picture TikTok shows on the creator's profile, straight from TikTok's own CDN.
The same result also offers the MP4 without the watermark, so one link gives you both the still image and the clip. Nothing is resized or re-compressed on our side, links expire after one hour, and no copy is kept.
What do you get from one link?
- The cover JPG the creator picked for the post.
- The video as an MP4 with no watermark.
- An HD copy of the video when TikTok stores one, from the HD tool.
- Every picture of a slideshow, through the TikTok photo downloader.

How do you download a TikTok thumbnail?
Copy the link of the post, paste it on this page, then tap Download thumbnail (JPG). It takes three taps and works the same in Safari, Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Samsung Internet. You need no app, no extension and no login.
Step 1: copy the link of the TikTok
In the TikTok app, open the video, tap the Share arrow, then Copy link. On a computer, open the post on tiktok.com and copy the address bar.
Step 2: paste it and tap Download
Come back here and paste the link into the box at the top. The Paste button does it in one tap in most browsers. Tap Download; on real public posts the lookup usually finishes in 0.6 to 1.8 seconds.
Step 3: save the JPG
Tap Download thumbnail (JPG). The file name ends in _cover.jpg, so it is easy to spot in Downloads or in Files. The watermark-free MP4 sits right below if you want the clip as well.
- Copy the TikTok link (Share, then Copy link).
- Paste it here and tap Download.
- Tap Download thumbnail (JPG).
- Open your Downloads folder or the Files app to find the cover.
On iPhone, Safari puts the JPG in Files, under Downloads. To move it into the Photos app, open it in Files, tap Share, then Save Image. The camera roll guide shows the same moves for videos.
What exactly is a TikTok cover image?
A TikTok cover image is the still picture that stands for a video before anyone presses play. TikTok's Help Center defines it in one line:
“A video cover is the thumbnail that previews your video in places like your profile or search results.”
So "TikTok thumbnail" and "TikTok cover" mean the same thing. It is the tile you see in a profile grid and on a search results page. It is usually one frame of the clip, picked by the creator, often with text placed on top.
Is the cover the same as the first frame?
Not always. If the creator never touches the cover setting, TikTok uses a frame of its own choice. If they open the cover picker, they can drag to any moment of the clip. That is why a cover often shows a reaction or a title card that appears halfway through the video.
Where do you see the cover on TikTok?
- In the creator's profile grid.
- In TikTok search results, as TikTok's Help Center notes.
- Anywhere TikTok shows a preview tile instead of playing the clip.
Saved covers pair well with the MP4 of the same post, or with the sound as an audio file if you are building a music clip.
How do creators choose or change a TikTok cover?
Creators pick the cover on the post screen, just before they publish. TikTok's own steps are short: tap Select cover on the video thumbnail, drag the frame to the moment you want, then tap Save.
- On the post screen, tap Select cover on the video thumbnail.
- Drag the frame to any point of the video.
- Tap Save at the top, then post as usual.
TikTok documents this in Editing, posting, and deleting. For photo posts, its Making a post page lists Edit cover among the options you get after tapping Next, next to the description, hashtags and privacy settings.
Can a creator change the cover after posting?
TikTok's help pages that we read describe choosing the cover before posting. They do not promise a way to change it later, so we will not claim one. If you are the creator, the safest habit is to check the cover on the post screen every time, because that is the image this TikTok thumbnail downloader will later return.
| Post type | Where the cover is set | What our tool returns |
|---|---|---|
| Video | Select cover on the post screen | The cover JPG + the MP4 |
| Photo slideshow | Edit cover after tapping Next | Use the photo tool for every image |
| Story | Posted to Your Story | Use the story downloader for the clip |
What file do you get: format, size and resolution?
You get a JPEG image, saved with a .jpg name. On our test of 2026-10-19, with one public sample video, the cover came from TikTok's CDN at 540×960 pixels and weighed about 53 KB. Other posts can differ, because TikTok decides what it serves.
| Property | On our test (2026-10-19) |
|---|---|
| Format | JPEG (.jpg) |
| Pixel size | 540 × 960 |
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 (vertical) |
| File size | ≈ 53 KB |
| File name ending | _cover.jpg |
| Source | TikTok's own CDN |
Why is the cover a JPEG?
JPEG is built for photos. Wikipedia's JPEG article notes the format has been around since 1992 and "typically achieves 10:1 compression" with a loss of quality that is widely seen as acceptable. That is why a full-screen cover can weigh only tens of kilobytes.
Can you get a bigger version of the cover?
Only if TikTok serves one. We hand you the file TikTok returns and never upscale it. If you need more pixels, a sharper option is a frame from the HD video file, paused and exported in a video editor.
Why save the cover instead of taking a screenshot?
A cover saved with a TikTok thumbnail downloader is the clean, original image; a screenshot also catches the like button, caption, username and status bar. Screenshot sizes also change from phone to phone, while the cover file is the same for everyone who saves it.
| Cover JPG from this page | Screenshot | |
|---|---|---|
| Interface on top | None | Buttons, caption, status bar |
| Pixel size | What TikTok serves (540×960 on our test) | Your screen's size |
| Exact chosen frame | Yes | Only if you pause at that moment |
| Needs the link | Yes | No |
- Covers saved here have no app interface on top.
- They keep the frame the creator actually chose.
- They come from TikTok's CDN, not from your screen.
- Pair the cover with the no-watermark MP4 for a clean set.
A screenshot still wins in one case: when you want a frame that is not the cover. Pause the video at that moment, or save the HD MP4 and export the frame in an editor.
What can you use a TikTok thumbnail for?
The most common, low-risk use is your own work: reusing the cover of your own video somewhere else. Creators also keep covers as visual references, as long as they do not republish other people's images.
- YouTube Shorts thumbnail for the same clip you cross-post.
- YouTube video thumbnail after you crop it to 16:9.
- Portfolio or media kit showing your best-performing posts.
- Website or blog post that links to your own TikTok.
- Reference board for planning colours, fonts and text placement.
- Archive of your own posts, next to the MP4 copy.
| Use | Your own post | Someone else's post |
|---|---|---|
| Shorts or YouTube thumbnail | Fine | Needs permission |
| Portfolio, media kit | Fine | Needs permission |
| Private reference board | Fine | Keep it private |
| Commentary or review | Fine | May be fair use; see the copyright section |
How do you reuse your cover as a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?
A TikTok cover already has the right shape for Shorts. YouTube Help says it plainly:
“For Shorts, try to upload a thumbnail with an aspect ratio of 9:16.”
According to YouTube Help, custom Shorts thumbnails are added in YouTube Studio on a computer, and your account must be verified. The upload itself is a few clicks.
- Save your cover here with the TikTok thumbnail downloader.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Open Content, then Shorts, and pick the Short.
- Under Thumbnail, click Upload file, choose the JPG, then click Save.
Is a 540×960 cover big enough for YouTube?
- Keep the cover at 9:16 for Shorts.
- Use the same clip, ideally the HD copy, when you cross-post.
- Upload in Studio on a computer, not in the mobile app.
It is usable but small. YouTube Help recommends 2160×3840 for Shorts thumbnails and a minimum height of 640 pixels, which our 960-pixel-tall test cover meets. For the sharpest result, export a frame from the HD file at full size.
What about a regular 16:9 YouTube video?
Regular videos want 16:9, so crop the cover first (see the iPhone, Android and Windows sections). YouTube Help also notes that vertical videos with 16:9 custom thumbnails get an automatic 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages.
Which aspect ratio fits where?
A TikTok cover is 9:16, tall and narrow. Most other places want 16:9, 1:1 or 4:5, so you crop. Wikipedia's aspect ratio article notes that 16:9 has been the mainstream standard for computer displays since 2010, which is why wide slots dominate on desktop sites.
| Ratio | Shape | Typical use | Crop of a 540×960 cover |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9:16 | Tall | TikTok, Shorts, Stories | 540 × 960 (no crop) |
| 4:5 | Slightly tall | Feed posts on many apps | 540 × 675 |
| 1:1 | Square | Profile grids, podcast art | 540 × 540 |
| 16:9 | Wide | YouTube videos, web banners | 540 × 304 |
How much of the picture do you lose?
Cropping to 16:9 keeps only about a third of the height (304 of 960 pixels). Keep the face or the title inside the middle band, or use the cover as a blurred background behind a wide layout instead of cropping hard.
| Target | Height kept | Share of picture kept |
|---|---|---|
| 4:5 | 675 px | ≈ 70% |
| 1:1 | 540 px | ≈ 56% |
| 16:9 | 304 px | ≈ 32% |
How do you crop the cover on iPhone?
Use the built-in Photos app: open the cover, tap Edit, tap Crop, then pick a preset ratio. Apple's iPhone User Guide lists presets such as Square, Wallpaper, 9:16 and 5:7, and you can unlock the ratio for a free crop.
- Save the cover from Files to Photos (Share, then Save Image).
- Open it in Photos and tap Edit.
- Tap Crop, then the aspect ratio button.
- Choose Square or another preset, drag to frame the subject.
- Tap Done.
- Square suits profile grids and the audio artwork of a remix.
- 9:16 keeps the cover ready for Shorts.
- Free crop lets you match any banner size.
Apple notes that dragging a corner keeps the original proportions until you tap the lock at the top right. Tap Revert later to undo the crop.
How do you crop the cover on Android?
Open the JPG in Google Photos, tap Edit, tap Crop, then tap Aspect ratio and pick a shape such as square. Google Photos Help also explains that Save as copy keeps the original cover untouched.
- Open the downloaded cover in Google Photos.
- Tap Edit, then Crop.
- Tap Aspect ratio and pick square or another shape.
- Drag the handles to frame the subject.
- Tap Save, then Save as copy.
Why choose Save as copy?
Google Photos Help says plain Save writes over the original photo, while Save as copy makes a new photo and leaves the original alone. Keep the 9:16 original for Shorts and crop a copy for everything else.
How do you crop the cover on Windows?
Open the JPG in the Windows Photos app, press Ctrl + E to edit, then use Crop with a preset aspect ratio. Microsoft Support describes cropping manually or with preset aspect ratios, plus rotating and flipping.
- Find the cover in Downloads and open it with Photos.
- Select Edit image, or press Ctrl + E.
- Open Crop and pick a preset aspect ratio.
- Drag the frame over the part you want.
- Save as a copy so the original stays intact.
Can you do this on a Mac or Chromebook?
- Open the JPG in the image app your system already has.
- Look for a crop tool with preset ratios.
- Keep the original and crop a copy.
Yes. Any image editor with a crop tool works the same way. The cover is an ordinary JPG, so nothing special is needed once it is saved.
What about TikTok photo slideshow posts?
For a photo slideshow, use the TikTok photo downloader instead. It saves every image of the post, not just the first one, which is what most people want from a slideshow.
- Video post: save the cover here, the clip from the video downloader.
- Photo slideshow: save every image with the photo downloader.
- Slideshow sound: take it with the MP3 tool.
TikTok's Making a post page says a photo post can hold up to 35 photos. A single cover would miss nearly all of them, so the photo tool is the right choice. Want to build your own slideshow? Read how to make a slideshow on TikTok.
Does it work on every device and browser?
Yes. The TikTok thumbnail downloader runs in the browser, so it works on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign in to.
| Device | Browser | Where the JPG lands |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone, iPad | Safari, Chrome | Files › Downloads |
| Android | Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox | Downloads folder |
| Windows | Edge, Chrome, Firefox | Downloads folder |
| Mac | Safari, Chrome | Downloads folder |
| Chromebook | Chrome | Files › Downloads |
The same link also works with the TikTok MP3 tool if you want the sound, and with the HD downloader if you want the sharpest video.
Why might the cover not download?
The usual reason the TikTok thumbnail downloader returns nothing is that the post is not public. Private, deleted and region-blocked posts, and drafts, cannot be opened by any outside tool. If TikTok does not serve the file, we cannot get it either.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| "Post not found" | Deleted, private or mistyped link | Copy the link again with Share › Copy link |
| No result after a while | Slow network or region block | Retry, or try another network |
| Link stopped working | Download links expire after 1 hour | Paste the post link again |
| Slideshow shows one image only | Wrong tool for photo posts | Use the photo downloader |
- Make sure the link points to one post, not a profile.
- Remove extra text pasted with the link.
- Open the link in the TikTok app to confirm the post is still up.
- Still stuck? Write to us through the contact page.
Is it legal to download someone else's TikTok cover?
Saving your own cover is fine. A cover made by someone else is their creative work, so reusing it publicly usually needs their permission. Viewing or keeping a private reference is a different matter from posting it as your own.
The U.S. Copyright Office's fair use FAQ explains that limited use for commentary, criticism, news reporting or scholarly reports can be allowed, but adds:
“There are no legal rules permitting the use of a specific number of words, a certain number of musical notes, or percentage of a work.”
- Your own cover: reuse it freely.
- Someone else's cover: ask the creator first.
- Credit the creator when you have permission.
- Never use another person's cover as your own YouTube thumbnail.
TikTok's Download content page also reminds users that saving depends on whether the creator allows downloads. Read our terms and, for rights holders, the DMCA page.
Is Tiktokio.tech safe and private?
Yes. You do not create an account to use the TikTok thumbnail downloader, and we do not store the cover or the video. The file comes from TikTok's CDN, and the download link expires after one hour.
- No sign-up, no app, no browser extension.
- Nothing is kept after the link expires.
- The JPG is passed as served, not edited.
- Details are in our privacy policy and on the about page.
Which Tiktokio.tech tool should you use for each file?
